ORCHID IN THE RAIN Alan Tang and Brigitte Lin starred in this romantic drama early in 1977. Both displayed oustanding acting ability with great chemistry between them. The Cast Alan Tang Kwong Wing Brigitte Lin Ching Hsia The Director John Lo Mar The Scriptwriter Shu Lan The Story Alan Tang (Cheng Yang) meets Brigitte Lin (Chiu Meng) as he is returning home by ferry late at night after a party. Brigitte has no coins to enter the ferry, only bills. Alan helps out and pays her fare. He is struck by her beauty and strikes up a conversation, only to be further intrigued when she brushes him off. He is obviously a rich playboy. Tang can't get her out of his mind and starts painting a picture of her. Tang is the son of a well-to-do family and a student. He accidently meets Brigitte again when he goes for art supplies and finds her working in a respectable painting supply and drafting shop. Alan convinces her to meet him. They become friends and eventually lovers. In spite of this, there is a gulf between them as Brigitte won't tell Alan about herself or her family. Finally one dark night Brigitte comes to Alan's home, informs him it is her birthday, and shocks him by asking for a drink. They argue over this and eventually she tells him she was a bargirl to support her family (sick mother, sister in school and do-nothing dad). She takes him to meet them in her poor home. Alan agonizes over these revelations and leaves her.
The situation gets worse when the two meet in a bar to discuss things and are confronted by a man (Lo Piao) who claims that Brigitte lived with him and that she is his. He meets with Tang and Tang convinces Lo Piao to marry Brigitte and take good care of her. Tang then convinces Brigitte that she should marry Lo Piao and that he will be a good husband for her. Both Tang's and Lin's hearts ache. WARNING: THE ENDING OF THE STORY FOLLOWS: Brigitte is so hurt by Tang that she does marry Lo Piao, who treats her like a servant and eventully tries to make her into a prostitute. When this happens Brigitte loses her mind and is committed to a mental institution. Brigitte's mother dies when she learns what has happened to her daughter. Unaware of what is happening, Tang still loves Brigitte and finally goes to her home to learn what has become of her. The sister tells Tang that Brigitte was pure and that he is responsible for Lo Piao ruining her. Tang seeks out Lo Piao beats him up and cripples him in a fight. Tang then goes to find Brigitte in the mental hospital where he is joined by his father. The two take Brigitte away in their expensive car with the goal of bringing her back to health. Be prepared to feel melancholy at the end.
