The Story

Alan Tang meets Sister Maria when she is a very young girl who is badly treated by her stepmother. Tang befriends her and, as they grow up, they fall in love. Unexpectedly, his love leaves and he is desolated.

Tang vows to find her and leaves for the city where he meets up with and becomes involved with a gang headed by Yee Lui's character. The gang fights, drinks, smokes and hangs out with questionable ladies. Tang's mother has come with him and is very upset with her son.

One night when Tang is trying to escape from the police, he accidently meets up with his love and is amazed to find out that she is now a nun called Sister Maria. He follows her back to the convent and tries to pick up where they left off. Sister Maria won't tell him why she left. There are many agonized scenes where the two lovers want each other but resist. Finally, they kiss causing the nun guilt. She convinces Tang to turn over a new leaf and join in religious activities. He does this enthusiastically, actually reading the Bible to the children where he lives.

Eventually he is rejected by Sister Maria and goes on a drunken spree where he is picked up by a nightclub tramp singer. She makes love to him and turns him into a drunken "boy toy".

WARNING CONCLUSION: Alan's mother goes to Sister Maria for help, telling her she is the only one who can save her son. Sister Maria goes to the bar and tries to get Alan, who is very drunk, to leave with her. She is jossled and pushed out into the street where she collapses in the rain.

The final scene takes place as Sister Maria is dying. Tang is there now sober and sorry. In her last moments, Sister Maria tells Tang that she left him after learning that she had cancer and had only a few years to live. She loved him too much to put him through watching her die. The lovers share a brief moment of love and she dies.
