Tang's mother hires an equally beautiful sweet girl played by Chen Chen to take care of Tang. At first Tang refuses to cooperate with her but eventually grows to like her. As their friendship deepens, Tang's mother becomes concerned, as she does not think Chen Chen is of the correct social class for her son.

WARNING CONCLUSION:Tang sees an eye doctor and, with Chen Chen's help and encouragement, undergoes eye surgery. Tang's mother forces Chen Chen to leave. When Tang opens his eyes after surgery, he finds his mother and his former girlfriend there. Tang, who can now see, leaves the hospital and rushes to the ferry boat in search of Chen Chen. He does not know what she looks like but recognizes the feel of her hands when the two meet. They are reunited on the ferry.
