Iaido, which originated in Japan, is a solitary, quiet, peaceful contemplative art comprised of short organized kata (exercises) performed with either a sword or bokken. Sensei Cyndy Jones started training in Iaido in 1987 with John Drouin, an outstanding martial artist and sword master who lived in Auburn, N.Y. Master Drouin trained under Japanese Sword Master Takeshi Mitsuzuka. After receiving her Sho-Dan in Iaido from Master Mitsuzuka in 1988, Sensei Jones started teaching an Iaido program in Rochester, N.Y. under Master John Drouin. Master Drouin promoted Sensei Jones to Ni-Dan in 1992, to San-Dan in 1998 and to Yon-Dan in 2003. They have continued their affliation since then. Master Drouin, who now lives in Florida, approves all Iaido Dan (Black Belt) level promotions. The program content developed by Sensei Jones and Master Drouin is as follows. It involves working with both the sword and bokken, plus specified readings and papers. In addition, students must show the application of sword techniques by developing and explaining their own kata.
